August brings an extraordinary treat to the night skies of Cyprus. This month, stargazers can enjoy the stunning Perseids meteor shower and a magnificent supermoon. These celestial events offer a dazzling spectacle that shouldn’t be missed.

Perseids Meteor Shower

The annual Perseids meteor shower is already lighting up the sky, and there are special events to enhance your viewing experience. The Kition Planetarium & Observatory will host its 17th annual meteor shower event on August 11 at the KiteMed Kitesurfing Club in Softades, starting at 7:30 PM. Following that, on August 12, a similar event will take place in Kyperounda, in collaboration with the Fakas Institute, starting at 8:00 PM.

August Supermoon

In addition to the meteor shower, a super full moon will grace the sky on August 19. According to the Kition Planetarium & Observatory, “On August 19, the Moon will be very close to the Earth.” To celebrate this event, the observatory will host a public gathering featuring a presentation and observations of the spectacular Supermoon.

Night Sky Highlights

“These days, Venus shines in the west, the Summer Triangle hangs high, the Milky Way is at its peak, and the Perseids meteor shower adds a romantic touch to Cyprus’ night sky. Observe with professional telescopes the gems of the night sky,” states the observatory.

Event Details

The evening event at the Kition Planetarium & Observatory will start at 7:30 PM, and reservations are required. The cost is €10 per person. The event will include an English presentation on the supermoon phenomenon, followed by an opportunity to observe the moon through telescopes.
