The Faneromeni24 Arts Festival is set to continue its vibrant summer schedule with a series of outdoor cinema nights throughout August. As September approaches, the festival will transition to cultural performances, including music, dance, and theatre, held in the picturesque courtyard of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The first performance to take the stage is the devised theatre piece P.S. Cyprus, scheduled for September 5.
A Unique Theatrical Experience
Presented by the Valitsa Intra Portas theatre troupe, P.S. Cyprus draws inspiration from historical writings and accounts of foreign travelers to weave a narrative about Cyprus. In this performance, four actors will embody a folk ensemble, recreating a festive gathering that evokes nostalgia for the past.
The organisers describe the performance as a feast of memories, stating, “Four actors in the guise of a folk bouloukio set up a celebration reminiscent of bygone days. We’ve become accustomed to idealizing the past. But how do the ‘others’, the ‘foreigners’, perceive our homeland? What is their perspective? Through letters, records, photographs, and other testimonies from international visitors, we create a dramaturgy that maps Cyprus’s image from the 14th to the 19th century.”
Journey Through Time
Spanning from the Ottoman era to the Anglo-Cypriot period, this performance highlights the transformation of Cyprus through the centuries, illustrating how European influences eventually replaced Eastern traditions. P.S. Cyprus offers a mosaic of cultures that have indelibly shaped Cyprus’s identity.
