Outdoor Cinema, Stand-Up Comedy, and Dance at Rialto Theatre this September
As September arrives, Limassol’s Rialto Theatre gears up for a month full of cultural events. The season kicks off with the annual outdoor cinema, held at the SEK Parking lot just behind the theatre. Running until September 10, this open-air event will showcase five films, bringing the best of international, independent cinema to the heart of Limassol.
Open-Air Cinema Nights
The outdoor cinema event will begin with the screening of the French film Un Triomphe on Wednesday, a film that won the Best European Comedy Award at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. More films from France, the USA, and Greece will be shown on September 6, 7, 9, and 10. All screenings start at 8:30 PM, with tickets priced at €8. Each film will be presented in its original language, with Greek or English subtitles.
Stantar Kkomety Festival
Following the cinema nights, from September 13 to 15, the 2nd edition of the Stantar Kkomety Festival will entertain audiences with stand-up comedy acts in both Greek and English, including performances tailored for children. This year’s festival aims to attract a broader audience by featuring English-speaking comedians alongside those performing in Greek, mainly in the Cypriot dialect. The festival, held at Heroes’ Square and the theatre, will also include comedy battles, live music, street food, and shows for young audiences.
Musical Evenings and Theatre Performances
The cultural offerings continue on September 17 with A Night of Cinematic Music. Pianist Manolis Neophytou will perform pieces from films like The Kid, Amelie, Schindler’s List, and more, accompanied by film clips. He will be joined by violist Nikolas Efthymiou and dancer Karolina Konstantinou.
On September 18, Alpha Square will stage Julian Mitchell’s play Another Country, featuring 10 Cypriot actors. Set in a 1930s English boarding school, the play examines themes of systemic discrimination and oppression, resonating with contemporary issues.
Opera and Dance-Theatre
The month’s programme also includes a broadcast of the renowned opera Romeo et Juliette from The Met in New York, scheduled for September 21. The following day, a dance-theatre piece titled Death in Three Acts will explore the issue of violence in society. This performance is free to the public, but reservations are required.
Cyprus Choreography Showcase
Wrapping up the month is the 3rd Cyprus Choreography Showcase, held in partnership with the Deputy Ministry of Culture. From September 27 to 29, local choreographers will present their work to audiences, artistic directors, and international contemporary dance festival representatives. Concurrently, Dance House Lemesos, Dance House Lefkosia, and Nea Kinisi will host parallel events, enriching the island’s dance scene.
