With the arrival of September, Cyprus embraces a series of traditional festivals that celebrate both the season and the island’s rich cultural heritage. Among these, Anogyra village in the Limassol district is gearing up for its 34th Pasteli Festival, set to take place in the central square on September 22.
Honoring Tradition and Culture
This one-day festival is dedicated to showcasing the tradition, cultural heritage, and significance of carobs and their various by-products. It also highlights traditional and creative gastronomy while offering educational opportunities for visitors.
“Pasteli is an integral part of Anogyra’s cultural heritage,” the organizers explain. “It is not only highly nutritious but also a valuable resource packed with vitamins and versatile in its uses. As you wander through the village’s stone-built houses and historical monuments, you’ll experience the rich tastes and aromas of this ‘black gold.’ Watch as carobs are transformed into golden pasteli, and savor the magic of its flavor. Every detail of the festival has been meticulously planned to ensure a day that delights all your senses.”
Festival Highlights
The village square will be bustling with 30 exhibitors showcasing a variety of traditional Cypriot delicacies made from carobs and carob syrup. In addition to sampling these treats, children can get involved in art-making workshops, led by four instructors, using the seeds and wood of the carob tree.
The village taverns will also be serving their unique dishes, and the charming streets of Anogyra will be lined with stands offering pasteli, organic cosmetics, carob syrup soaps, and more. No Cypriot festival would be complete without live entertainment, and this event is no exception. Musicians and dancers will perform throughout the day, with the festivities running from 11am to 8pm.
