The Michalis Pieris Cultural Centre is once again opening its doors, inviting the university community, art enthusiasts, and esteemed artists for two months of captivating performances. Set in the starry garden of Axiothea, the second part of the 27th Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus begins this Thursday, offering a unique experience.
An Array of Artistic Performances
This year’s festival promises a rich blend of performances, workshops, and seminars led by artists, groups, bands, and music academies from both Cyprus and abroad. With a focus on music, dance, poetry, theatre, and literature, the festival brings people together through art, enhancing the September cultural scene with 16 exciting performances.
Organizers emphasize that this autumn, audiences will have the opportunity to meet new and distinctive artists, many of whom will make their debut on the Axiothea mansion stage. International performers from countries like Germany, Greece, Italy, and Norway will also take part, some visiting Cyprus for the first time. The festival will showcase a fusion of folk traditions, where local music, songs, and dances will be performed with great reverence for their ancient heritage, while also offering sounds and rhythms from distant lands that evoke unexpected emotions and a unique sense of connection.
Cultural Highlights
The festival is not just about performances. It will delve into the power of literature and shine a light on historically overlooked, yet pioneering artists who pushed boundaries, inspiring others with their vision and opening new aesthetic horizons. Running until October 12, the event promises to feature emerging talents alongside well-established artists, ensuring a diverse range of artistic expression.
Opening Performance: Nenemia
Kicking off this festival season is the Nenemia performance, a musical collaboration between three distinguished musicians: Gabriel Karapatakis from Cyprus, Zacharias Spyridakis from Crete, and Hub Hildenbrand from Germany. Together, they will present a cross-cultural jazz project at Axiothea Mansion in old town Nicosia this Thursday, blending original sounds with new compositions played on bass, Cretan lyra, and guitar. This performance draws from their debut digital album, Nenemia.
