Next month, The Gallery 45 is set to introduce a captivating new exhibition featuring the works of Nicosia-based artist Iacovos Loizou. The exhibition, titled “Conscious Mapping”, will be held at Baxter Garage, Limassol, with the opening set for October 18, and the exhibition running until November 23. Co-curated by Katerina Rebello Savvides and Sanaz Nazemi Agha, this event delves into the relationship between urban planning and artistic expression, with a specific focus on street art.
According to the organisers, Conscious Mapping is a visual journey that showcases the innovative work of Loizou, an artist and urban planner. His art blends elements of urban design with street art, creating a unique fusion that explores the boundaries between the two disciplines. As a researcher, urban planner, and visual artist from Cyprus, Loizou’s art bridges these worlds by incorporating urban planning symbols into his work while drawing inspiration from the digital era, pop culture, and anime. His pieces are known for their social commentary and use of humour. Loizou’s time in Japan during his 2023 art residency exposed him to the dynamic world of Japanese street art, which has significantly influenced his style, enriching his pieces with a sense of cultural depth and community engagement.
Loizou’s artistic approach, which continues to examine the intersection of urban life and art, extends beyond his personal work. He is also involved with the Nicosia-based NGO OPU Collective, which he co-founded, and his research within the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus. This October, Loizou brings his urban-inspired art to Limassol, offering viewers a month-long exhibition filled with vibrant colour and creativity.
