The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation is kicking off its annual Moments at the Museum ’24 with an engaging and interactive family workshop titled Camila Kamilari, Let’s Go to Varosha. The event will take place on Sunday and promises a morning of music and creativity for young visitors and their families. This year’s workshop aims to explore the traditional children’s songs of Cyprus through both musical performances and artistic expression, creating a memorable cultural experience for all attendees.
A Musical Journey through Cypriot Traditions
At the heart of this workshop is a collaboration between young participants and local musicians, embarking on a musical journey that celebrates the traditional songs of Cyprus. Led by the musical group ANTAMA, children will not only sing along to these beloved tunes but will also explore the history and craftsmanship behind the traditional musical instruments of Cyprus. This includes hands-on interaction with instruments like the violin, lute, tabouchia, and pithkiavli, as they learn about the materials they’re made from and the role each one plays in Cypriot folk music.
Discovering Folk Rhythms through Play
In addition to the musical exploration, participants will be introduced to the distinct rhythms of Cypriot folk music through a series of interactive music games. This engaging experience will also feature traditional songs such as ‘Pyri pyri to papyrus’, ‘Camel camel’, and ‘Chibi chibi to aito’, allowing the children to connect deeply with Cyprus’s rich musical heritage.
Creativity and Artistic Expression
The workshop goes beyond just music. Under the guidance of animator and visual artist Irini Zenonos, children and their parents will be encouraged to illustrate performances inspired by the traditional songs they have heard. This unique blend of music and visual art will help young participants channel their imagination and creativity by crafting their own improvised musical instruments and artistic representations of their experiences from the workshop.
