A captivating musical evening is set to unfold in Paphos this weekend as the Cyprus-based choir, Spellbound, graces the stage of the Markideio Theatre. This women’s chorus will not be performing alone on Saturday; they will be joined by the renowned Main Street Quartet from Disneyland Paris, promising an evening of enchanting and whimsical music. This special event coincides with World Singing Day, making the celebration even more meaningful.
An Evening of Diverse Music
The performance begins at 7:30 PM, with the Paphos-based choir Spellbound taking center stage to delight the audience with a diverse selection of popular songs, both from recent decades and timeless classics. The repertoire will include hits like “How Deep Is Your Love” by The Bee Gees, “Mamma Mia” by Abba, “Somebody to Love” by Queen, “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse, and the classic “When I Fall in Love” by Nat King Cole. This wide range of songs ensures that audience members of all ages will find something to enjoy.
Spellbound’s Growth and Vision
Formed in January 2023, Spellbound started with just 12 members and has since expanded to a group of 37 singers. Reflecting their international reach, the chorus comprises women from 12 different nationalities, many of whom are new to this particular style of singing. “We are a chorus for all women,” says the group, underscoring the inclusive and welcoming spirit that defines their ensemble.
Performing a cappella—singing without instrumental accompaniment—Spellbound focuses on the barbershop harmony style, adding a unique layer to their performance. In addition to this weekend’s event, the choir has ambitious plans for the future, as they will represent Cyprus at an international chorus competition in The Netherlands next March. This weekend’s concert gives the Paphos audience a preview of their impressive vocal talents.
Special Guests: The Main Street Quartet
Joining Spellbound for this special performance is the iconic Main Street Quartet, who made their debut in 1992 during the grand opening of Disneyland Paris, singing live to an audience of over 100 million viewers worldwide. Since then, they have entertained countless visitors at Disneyland, made numerous appearances on television and radio, and performed across Europe and the US. However, this Saturday marks their first performance in Cyprus.
Their setlist for the evening will feature well-known and beloved songs such as “My Girl” by The Temptations, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” from Disney, “I’m Sittin’ on Top of the World” by Bobby Darin, and “Walking My Baby Back Home” by Nat King Cole. These familiar tunes are sure to captivate and entertain the audience.
