November brings a vibrant lineup of cultural events across Cyprus, from street food festivals to book fairs, markets, concerts, and other cultural gatherings. Adding to this diverse calendar, Japanese cinema is making its return as the Embassy of Japan prepares a new series of Japanese film screenings in Nicosia and Limassol.
This cinematic journey will feature four film screenings throughout November, offering audiences in Cyprus a chance to experience Japanese storytelling and culture. Three of the films will be shown at the Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia, with a final screening at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol. Entry to all screenings is free, with English subtitles provided.
A Look at the Featured Films
1. The House of the Lost on the Cape
On November 9 at 6:00 pm, the Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia will host the first screening, featuring the animated film The House of the Lost on the Cape. This touching story centers on 17-year-old Yui, a runaway, and 8-year-old Hiyori, a young girl who has lost her family and her voice. They meet Kiwa, a mysterious elderly woman who offers them a place to stay in Mayoiga, a legendary house believed to offer shelter to lost souls. Through their time in Mayoiga, the two girls find comfort, healing, and a sense of belonging.
2. Iwane: Sword of Serenity
The next screening, scheduled for November 13 at 8:30 pm, presents Iwane: Sword of Serenity, a gripping action-drama. The story follows Iwane Sakazaki, who returns to his homeland only to experience the devastating loss of two childhood friends in a tragic incident. His journey as a ronin—a masterless samurai—leads him to leave his fiancée and roam aimlessly, confronting his past and the challenges of a life in exile.
3. Tsugaru Lacquer Girl
On November 20 at 8:30 pm, Pantheon Theatre will showcase Tsugaru Lacquer Girl, a drama depicting the life of Aoki Miyako. As the young woman assists her father in his traditional Tsugaru lacquerware workshop, she faces the hardships of an industry in decline. Miyako’s determination to revitalize the art form is a powerful testament to her dedication and passion for her heritage.
4. Children of the Sea
The film series will conclude with Children of the Sea at Rio Cinema in Limassol on November 27 at 8:00 pm. This visually stunning animated film follows Ruka, a young girl who meets two extraordinary boys, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs in the ocean. Together, they embark on an adventure that reveals cosmic secrets, the mysteries of the sea, and Ruka’s deep connection to the natural world.
