The city of Nicosia is often associated with its divided status, a topic frequently making headlines and shaping perceptions of life there. However, Nicosia is not alone in this distinction. Another city that once shared this experience is Berlin, which has since emerged as a global hub for urban and alternative art. Both cities demonstrate how art can transform perceptions and bridge divides.
To honor the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Embassy is hosting a thought-provoking event on Friday, exploring the powerful intersection of history and community. But how does this relate to Nicosia and Cyprus? The event features a Cypriot street artist who has contributed significantly to Nicosia’s urban landscape. This artist will participate in a panel discussion held at the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, offering insights into how art can address the theme of division.
Berlin’s East Side Gallery: Art on a Symbol of Separation
Joining the event’s panel is Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal, Director of the East Side Gallery in Berlin. The East Side Gallery is an open-air art exhibit painted along a remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall. Shortly after the Wall fell, artists from around the globe transformed a 1.3-kilometer section into a vibrant display of hope, reconciliation, and freedom. With over 100 murals, the gallery serves as both an artistic landmark and a testament to Berlin’s journey from division to unity.
Transformation of a Historical Wall
During the panel, Arnim-Rosenthal will share the story of the Berlin Wall’s evolution from a harsh symbol of the Cold War into a platform for connection and dialogue. The transformation highlights how art can turn even the most divisive structures into mediums of communication and hope.
Nicosia’s Artistic Dialogue on Division
Bridging the historical relevance of Berlin with the contemporary realities of Nicosia, Cypriot street artist Twenty Three will join facilitator Marios Epaminondas to discuss themes of walls, separation, and the role of art in healing divides. This conversation promises to offer a unique perspective on how Nicosia, like Berlin, uses art to foster community resilience in the face of separation.
