Experience Medieval Drama in Nicosia This Winter
Transport yourself to the heart of the Middle Ages with a riveting theatrical experience in Nicosia. James Goldman’s iconic play, The Lion in Winter, which earned an Academy Award for its screenplay adaptation, offers an intense portrayal of the royal family of England during Christmas Eve in 1183. For King Henry II and his family, the word “dysfunctional” barely scratches the surface.
This acclaimed production, brought to life by Alpha Square, has been captivating audiences at Casteliotissa Hall since November. Featuring a Greek adaptation performed by a talented local cast, the show runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout December. The play will also make special appearances in Limassol and Paphos in January, ensuring more audiences can enjoy this medieval masterpiece.
A Tale of Schemes, Power, and Betrayal
The story unfolds during the Christmas festivities of 1183 at the French castle of Chinon. King Henry II is joined by his estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, who has been imprisoned for the past decade. What follows is a web of political intrigue, personal vendettas, and strategic plotting among Henry, Eleanor, their three sons—Richard, Geoffrey, and John—and their guest, King Philip II of France.
Adding to the tension is Alais, Philip’s half-sister, who was once betrothed to Richard but is now Henry’s mistress. At the heart of the negotiations lie three crucial stakes: the English crown, the inheritance of French territories, and Alais’ future. Beneath these battles for power lies an undercurrent of jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and unresolved family scars.
A Theatrical Triumph
Set in the atmospheric Casteliotissa Hall, this production is a feast for the senses. Andreas Araouzos masterfully directs the Greek adaptation, while Dimitris Zachariou’s original music enhances the drama. The hall’s medieval ambiance is brought to life with creative lighting by Nikos Mylonas and stunning costumes and set designs by Giorgos Giannou.
The skilled cast includes Varnavas Kyriakides, Annita Santorinaiou, Michalis Kazakas, Andreas Daniil, Michalis Anayiotos, Anthi Kasinou, and Nikos Kosonas, who deliver powerful performances that capture the intensity of the royal family’s conflicts.
Expanding the Stage
As the New Year approaches, the production will journey beyond Nicosia. On January 5, it will grace the stage of Pattihio Municipal Theatre in Limassol at 6pm, followed by a performance at Markideio Theatre in Paphos on January 8 at 8pm.
