The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Presents Freakadella: The Witch Who Hated Christmas Carols
This December, a delightful and humorous Christmas story by Evgenios Trivizas, Freakadella: The Witch Who Hated Christmas Carols, will enchant audiences across Cyprus. A performance blending orchestra, choir, and narration, under the artistic direction of the esteemed Alkis Baltas, honorary conductor of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, will bring the beloved tale to life.
A Theatrical Premiere for Cyprus Audiences
Marking its debut in Cyprus, this production promises an innovative take, emphasizing theatrical elements to highlight the story’s vibrant humor and thrilling action. Three performances are scheduled: December 18 at Nicosia’s Strovolos Municipal Theatre (already sold out), December 19 at Paphos’ Markideio Municipal Theatre, and December 20 at Limassol’s Pattihio Municipal Theatre.
Star Performers and Mesmerizing Music
Renowned actor Petros Georkadjis will embody the role of Freakadella, a modern-day witch, donning a custom-designed costume by Rea Olympiou. The enchanting choral segments will be performed by the ΣymhpoΠedia Choir and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra Choir, adding depth to the performance.
Supporting a Charitable Cause
In collaboration with Radiomarathon, a charitable organization, bazaars featuring a variety of items will be held at the entrance halls of all three theatres. These will open at 6 pm, preceding the concerts. Proceeds will support the institution’s charitable initiatives.
An Enchanting Tale of Magic and Transformation
Described by organizers as “a story filled with magic, adventure, and a heartwarming metamorphosis,” the tale centers around Freakadella, a witch who despises goodness and especially loathes Christmas carols. Her fury leads her to transform children into animals whenever they sing carols. Yet, despite their new forms, the children continue to sing, ultimately melting Freakadella’s heart. The witch’s adventures unfold into a touching narrative about change, kindness, and the power of music.
A Festive Gala to Usher in the Holiday Spirit
Before Freakadella’s premiere, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra will host a festive gala concert on December 16 at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. The evening will feature renowned vocalists, including baritone Kyros Patsalides, tenor Hector Sandoval, and mezzo-soprano Anastasia Maximova. Rising Cypriot sopranos Maria Poulli, Constantina Nicolaou, and Eleni Charalambous will also grace the stage. Audiences will enjoy iconic operatic arias and orchestral masterpieces by composers such as Bizet, Puccini, and Verdi.
