Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ Poised for Record-Breaking Billion-Dollar Milestone
Pixar and Disney’s Inside Out 2 is on the verge of closing June with a historic achievement, becoming the first film of 2024 to surpass the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales. This accomplishment is expected to be reached by Sunday or Monday, making it the fastest animated film to ever hit this milestone, within just 17 to 18 days of release.
Dominating the Box Office
The sequel will effortlessly maintain its top position at the box office for the third consecutive weekend, surpassing the releases of A Quiet Place: Day One and Kevin Costner’s ambitious period Western, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One.
Strong Competitors: ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ and ‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One’
‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ is projected to debut with $40 million to $45 million. Despite being a prequel without the original stars John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, the film, directed by Michael Sarnoski, boasts performances by Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, which contribute to its strong opening expectations.
‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One’ is generating significant curiosity. Kevin Costner’s $100 million period Western, which he has passionately worked on for decades, is expected to open with $10 million to $12 million. Despite concerns about its lengthy three-hour runtime and high production costs, many believe it will perform well, particularly in the American heartland.
Kevin Costner’s Bold Endeavor
Kevin Costner left a lucrative role in Taylor Sheridan’s hit series Yellowstone to realize his long-time passion project. He invested $38 million of his own money into Horizon, with additional funding from two undisclosed investors and sales of foreign rights. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival with the help of K5 International. Warner Bros. agreed to distribute and market the film in the U.S. for a fee. The sequel, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two, is scheduled for release on August 16, following one of Hollywood’s most unusual distribution plans.
Inside Out 2’s Record-Breaking Run
Inside Out 2 has shattered numerous records since its global debut over two weeks ago. It has rejuvenated the 2024 box office, turning June from a gloomy to a blooming month. On Tuesday, the film entered the top 10 highest-grossing animated films domestically, with $387.8 million in ticket sales. Internationally, it amassed $411.9 million, bringing its global total to $798.2 million, just behind Shrek the Third ($799.5 million).
A New Milestone for Animated Films
Frozen II, from Pixar’s sister division Walt Disney Animation Studios, holds the record as the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $1.45 billion globally. The last animated film to surpass $1 billion was Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. The last Pixar film to achieve this was Incredibles 2 in 2019. Inside Out 2 will soon become only the eleventh film to cross the $1 billion mark and the eighth from either Pixar or Walt Disney Animation.
Inside Out 2’s success continues to set a new standard in the animation industry, paving the way for future blockbuster releases and demonstrating the enduring appeal of Pixar’s creative storytelling.
