Mark your calendars for the return of the annual Cherry Festival in Kambos and Tsakkistra during the first weekend of June. This beloved event, organized by the Community Council of Kambos in collaboration with the Cultural Development Association of Kambou-Tsakkistra, enjoys the patronage of Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and the deputy ministry of tourism.
Cherry cultivation has deep roots in Cyprus, spanning back to ancient times, and remains an integral part of its agricultural and cultural tapestry. Historically, cherry harvesting was a communal endeavor, eagerly awaited each spring by families and neighbors alike. Today, while technology has modernized the process, the spirit of celebration surrounding the harvest endures.
The Cherry Festival in Kambos and Tsakkistra honors this tradition and the hard work of farmers and producers. It serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of agriculture and heritage in these villages’ history.
Scheduled for June 1 and 2 in Kambos, the festival promises a delightful experience for all attendees. The event boasts a diverse lineup of activities, including a two-day artistic program featuring talents like Giorgos Kalogirou, Katerina Paraschou, Andreas Elesnitsalis, and Paris Paraschos.
Saturday’s agenda includes workshops at the village square, traditional bread-making, and the crafting of cherry spoon sweets. The day concludes with captivating live performances, setting the stage for Sunday’s festivities. In addition to Cypriot delicacies, visitors can learn about the art of making mochi sweets, a traditional Japanese treat, courtesy of the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus.
As part of the Cherry Festival, an exhibition titled “Fisiognomies” by photographer Nikos Kofteros will showcase captivating images capturing village life, landscapes, and the faces of those who have shaped the community. This exhibition, supported by the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities Charalambos Christofides and the Press and Information Office, offers a glimpse into the essence of these villages.
