Healing Through Art: A Dual Perspective on the Cancer Journey
October is a significant month for raising awareness, as it marks both World Mental Health Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of these causes, the Breast Centre of Cyprus is hosting a full-day event on October 22, centered around the dual focus of breast cancer awareness and early diagnosis. As part of the event, an inspiring art exhibition titled Healing Arts, created by renowned artist and art therapist Eleni Petridou Bouriti, will be featured. This exhibition delves into the emotional and physical dimensions of those facing cancer.
Eleni’s Exhibition: Bridging Art and Healing
Eleni Petridou Bouriti’s latest exhibition serves as a platform to discuss the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment, while emphasizing the therapeutic role of art. Drawing inspiration from her personal journey and the diagnostic services provided by the Breast Centre of Cyprus, her work captures the complex emotions of loss, recovery, and empowerment.
In this series, Eleni navigates her own path to healing after the death of a loved one due to cancer. Her artwork encapsulates the deep emotions associated with grief, transformation, and the human ability to find strength amidst adversity. Through her expressive pieces, she portrays the intertwined emotions of suffering and resilience.
“As an artist and art psychotherapist,” Eleni explains, “I use my work to translate the challenges of my personal and professional life into visual expressions. My art functions as a social tool, aiming to raise awareness and highlight how art can act as a medium for connection, healing, and hope.”
Symbolism in Medicine and Art
The exhibition integrates elements such as digital mammography, ultrasound technology, and other medical tools used at the Breast Centre of Cyprus, giving these symbols a deeper meaning. Through her mixed-media techniques, Eleni creates a narrative that underscores the importance of prevention and regeneration.
Her use of materials like gauze, bandages, glass, and light serves to reflect the sensitivity and fragility of the human body, particularly during moments of illness. However, these materials also convey the inner strength and resilience that can emerge through care and solidarity. The combination of themes focusing on the psychosomatic effects of cancer, and the integration of prevention and healing, reflect humanity’s capacity to find hope and strength in difficult times.
Art as a Space for Reflection and Empowerment
The exhibition acts as a reflective space where visitors are invited to consider the dual nature of the cancer experience — the vulnerability and isolation it can cause, contrasted with the collective strength and solidarity that often arise from such adversity. Eleni’s work powerfully transforms feelings of pain and uncertainty into a source of creativity and healing, demonstrating the profound role of art in fostering emotional recovery and resilience.
A portion of the proceeds from the artwork sales will be directed towards launching a pilot programme focused on research and the implementation of group art psychotherapy sessions for women who have experienced cancer. This initiative aims to provide both therapeutic support and community-building opportunities for cancer survivors.
Breast Cancer Awareness through Creative Initiatives
The Breast Centre of Cyprus has planned a series of creative events alongside the exhibition to promote cancer awareness. These include workshops, talks, and another thought-provoking exhibition titled Breast Cancer: From Diagnosis to Treatment. Do We Treat the Disease or the Patient? A Multidisciplinary Approach. These initiatives aim to provide essential information, psychological support, and creative outlets for individuals affected by cancer.
