Artistic Reflections on Exile
Though summer often sees a lull in new exhibitions, the island’s vibrant art scene continues to thrive. As July draws to a close, a fresh exhibition emerges. The IN EX(ILE) Lab Artist Showcase features the works of artists Eisa Baddour and Nina Itova, developed within the framework of IN EX(ILE) Lab. These pieces will be on display at the Goethe-Institut Cyprus in Nicosia from July 24 to 27.
Interactive Performance Installation: Agapi (Love)
Eisa Baddour’s interactive performance installation, Agapi (Love), takes place in the Mediterranean Sea along the Cypriot shores. Baddour has crafted wooden pieces that spell out “agapi” (love in Greek) and can be rearranged to form “aşk” (love in Turkish). This installation invites reflection on the emotions that unite us beyond linguistic and cultural differences. Local and migrant artisans from around Cyprus created the letters.
Exploring Trauma and Healing: The Corner
Nina Itova’s work, The Corner, delves into the metaphor of isolation and the journey from trauma to healing. “It began as a simple metaphor about the limitations in communication,” Itova explains. “With my psychotherapist’s help, I utilized Schwartz’s IFS therapeutic approach to work through trauma. This installation explores the exile space—the corner where children are punished. I use a mirror on my chest to symbolize my escape, playing the role of both guide and ultimate Other. Despite reinventing a specific punishment ritual from the former USSR, the emotions of isolation and sounds can resonate universally.”
