Excited for global cinema? Film enthusiasts and language aficionados, rejoice! The forthcoming festival caters to your passions. The second installment of the Iberoamerican Film Festival is slated to occur in Nicosia this month, bringing cinematic gems from distant shores.
Presented by the embassies of Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Portugal, and Spain, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Nicosia and The Friends of the Cinema Society, this event spans five evenings of diverse film screenings.
Starting from May 21 and continuing on May 23, 28, 30, and June 4, the University of Nicosia’s Cine Studio will host the carefully curated movie selections, offering Cypriot audiences a glimpse into the world of Latin-American cinema.
The festival kicks off next Tuesday with the Brazilian animated coming-of-age adventure, “O Menino e o Mundo – The Boy and the World,” directed by Alê Abreu. It follows a boy’s journey as he ventures from his hometown in search of his father, who sought employment in the city. Along the way, he encounters a myriad of characters and life’s lessons, unprepared for the experiences his imagination had not foreseen. The screening starts at 8 pm, followed by a brief cocktail reception.
Subsequent screenings will commence at 8:30 pm and will feature films shown in their original languages with English or Greek subtitles.
The second film night presents “Modello 77,” a Spanish production inspired by a real attempted prison break from Barcelona’s Cárcel Modelo by 45 inmates.
On May 28, audiences can enjoy the Portuguese film “Salgueiro Maia,” portraying a man hailed as a hero and a symbol of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974.
Following that, the Peruvian film “La Pena Maxima” on May 30 recounts the tale of a man’s murder in Lima during the 1978 Argentina World Cup.
Wrapping up the festival on June 4 is the Cuban film “Habanastation,” delving into the experiences of two friends and classmates during Cuba’s May 1st celebrations for International Workers’ Day.
And the best part? Admission to all screenings is free!
