A series of vibrant events are set to unfold in Limassol under the banner of the Casts of an Island exhibition. Commencing this Saturday, the exhibition will play host to a lineup of artists every weekend evening for engaging presentations and discussions centered around its thematic core. The inaugural session features visual artist Kyriaki Costa.
Artistic Dialogues and Reflections
Each session promises a deep dive into a spectrum of topics, probing how the artists’ creations intersect with the broader world. Delving into themes of ‘practices of relevance’ and the essence of artistic endeavor, these dialogues will illuminate various facets of identity, critical inquiry, and the role of art in processes of memory and healing.
Unveiling Layers of Time and Memory
The first session will spotlight a pivotal conceptual thread of the exhibition: the exploration of how artists navigate real and imagined landscapes to unearth layers of history and memory. This exploration often unveils a tapestry of contrasts—revelation and erasure, creation and destruction—akin to a palimpsest, where the present overlays traces of the past.
Costa will showcase her works Near Far and As the Rock Wears Out, exemplifying this artistic approach. She will delve into her creative process, emphasizing her practice of weaving narratives and ideas, along with her unique methods of documenting and imprinting. The session will culminate in a screening of her films followed by an interactive discussion.
Kyriaki Costa: Bridging Art and Anthropology
Costa, renowned as an interdisciplinary artist and researcher, integrates myth, history, philosophy, and ecological concerns into her work. Collaborating with experts across diverse disciplines, she crafts installations and artworks that resonate nationally and internationally, finding homes in esteemed private, public, and state collections. Since 2015, she has also served as the artistic coordinator of the NGO Faneromeni 70 in Nicosia.
A Celebration of Art and History
Throughout July, the exhibition will continue to showcase presentations by artists Elina Ioannou, Stelios Kallinikou, and Fanos Kyriakou. Curated by art theorist and curator Evagoras Vanezis, these parallel activities are integral to the exhibition’s broader exploration of Cypriot historical and social imaginaries.
Beyond commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion, Casts of an Island marks the metamorphosis of Limassol’s Carob Warehouses from industrial relics into a thriving hub of artistic expression, housing over a hundred compelling artworks.
