This fall, a vibrant celebration of Cypriot cinema is set to enrich Cyprus’ cultural landscape. The Cyprus Film Archive (Kypriaki Tainiothiki) is orchestrating a series of screenings that will bring local films to audiences throughout November and December. Towns such as Nicosia, Famagusta, Limassol, and Paphos will host these special film nights, presenting a wide variety of local films in different venues.
Thematic Film Series: Green Line Films and Reconciliation & Reunification
These screenings are divided into two compelling themes: Green Line Films and Films of Reconciliation and Reunification. Beginning in Nicosia in early November and continuing through mid-December, these screenings will take place at unique venues across the old town, such as Yfantourgeio, Arabahmet Cultural Centre in north Nicosia, and CVAR Severis Foundation. These venues, each adding their own ambiance, will host screenings nearly every day throughout the event’s duration.
Subtitled Screenings for Multilingual Audiences
To ensure accessibility for all, each film will be screened with subtitles tailored to the audience. Greek-speaking audiences will have Greek subtitles, and Turkish-speaking audiences will have Turkish subtitles. Some films at Yfantourgeio will feature English subtitles only, while films at CVAR will cater to English-speaking audiences as well.
Screenings at Nicosia Venues: Yfantourgeio, Arabahmet, and CVAR Severis Foundation
The first screenings are scheduled at Yfantourgeio this week, starting on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Christos Georgiou’s Under the Stars, Yiannis Ioannou’s Mixed Winds, and Roads and Oranges. Following these initial screenings, the schedule includes frequent showings across the three venues throughout November.
Arabahmet will feature Panikos Chrysanthou’s Our Wall on November 4. The next set of films returns to Yfantourgeio from November 8 to 10, showcasing works like Dervis Zaim’s Shadows and Faces, Costas Demetriou’s Road to Ithaca, and Chrystalla Avgousti’s The Handkerchief.
CVAR Severis Foundation joins the screenings toward the end of November. Some of the key dates include November 19 with Searching for Selten by Antonis Agastiniotis, November 22 for Panikos Chrysanthou’s Details in Cyprus, and November 23 for Andreas Pantzis’s Trimithi. Additional screenings with English subtitles include Akamas on November 26, The Handkerchief on November 28, and Parallel Travels on November 29.
Film Screenings in Famagusta District: Deryneia and Famagusta Walled City
The Famagusta district screenings are a collaboration between the two Famagusta municipalities, with films showing at the Cultural Center of Famagusta Municipality in Deryneia and the Pantopoleio in Famagusta’s old walled city. Scheduled dates for Deryneia include November 20, 25, 28 and December 2 and 4, while Famagusta will host screenings on November 21, 24, 27, and 29 and December 1. A weekly program with film details, duration, and subtitles will be made available by the Cyprus Film Archive.
Further Screenings in Limassol and Paphos
Limassol’s Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre will host additional film nights on November 5 to 8, November 10, 15, 25, and 26. In Paphos, the film showings will take place at the Paphos House of Letters and Arts. Starting with Smuggling Hendrix on December 5, the Paphos screenings continue with The Story of the Green Line on December 6, Flowers and Bullets on December 7, and conclude with Akamas on December 11.
