Next Wednesday, Paphos will host an exciting event that promises to captivate both the French-speaking community and cinema enthusiasts. The feature film screening of Frantz is set to take place, offering a cinematic experience with a unique touch—an actress from the film will provide an insider’s perspective on the production. Save the date for October 9 and head to the Attikon Open Air Theatre for a screening starting at 7pm.
Event Details and Organisation
The screening is organized by the French Society of Paphos. The film will be presented in its original language, accompanied by French and German subtitles. Frantz is a French-German co-production, inspired by Ernst Lubitsch’s film The Man Driven by Conscience. This emotional drama unfolds through a predominantly black-and-white aesthetic, telling the story of a German woman mourning her fiancé, who died during World War I, and a French soldier she encounters at the fiancé’s grave. The twist? He’s the very man responsible for her fiancé’s death on the battlefield.
Directed by François Ozon, the film was well-received globally, premiering at the 73rd Venice Film Festival in 2016 and earning accolades at various international film festivals. It also received 11 César nominations and two nominations for the European Film Awards in 2017.
Behind the Scenes with Alice Moustier
The event will feature actress Alice Moustier, a resident of Paphos who appeared in the film as an extra in three scenes. Inspired by her experience on set, she now brings Frantz to Cyprus, eager to share her journey during the production. Alice will speak at the event, sharing insights about the film’s creation and her role within it.
Reflecting on her time in the film, Moustier mentioned, “I wasn’t even aware of the full plot while filming. When I watched it for the first time in 2016, I was deeply moved. It resonated with my own life, as my French grandparents had a strong affection for Germany, and my father later emigrated there. I am familiar with the lingering tensions between French and German people, which the film explores so delicately.”
