An Underwater Showcase: Ocean of Threads
The Oroklini Marine Protected Area in Larnaca is currently home to a one-of-a-kind exhibition titled Ocean of Threads: A Fusion of Fashion, Art, and Marine Protection. This exhibition, which has been submerged since mid-September, will remain on display underwater until the end of 2024. It is a collaborative project between artist Michalis Pantelides, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, and the Larnaca Tourism Board.
Creativity with a Purpose: Fostering Marine Conservation Awareness
Ocean of Threads goes beyond a traditional art exhibition, delivering a strong message about the critical role of art and creativity in promoting ocean conservation. According to the exhibition’s organizers, it highlights how the power of artistic expression can inspire a deeper connection with the need to protect our oceans.
Sustainable Fashion from Recycled Plastic
The exhibition features fashion items created by Pantelides from recycled plastic bottles, showcasing sustainability in fashion. The artist has designed scarves and dresses adorned with vibrant collages, utilizing underwater photographs taken by Alexandros Papandreou. These designs celebrate the hidden beauty beneath Larnaca’s waters, drawing attention to the importance of marine ecosystems.
Raising Awareness of Marine Biodiversity
A key goal of this project is to raise public awareness about the rich marine biodiversity in the area and the urgent need to protect it. Every piece in the collection serves as a symbol of our interconnectedness with the marine environment, reminding us of the vital role we play in its preservation.
