Cypriot visual artist, illustrator, and writer Lefki Savvidou is set to unveil her latest artistic endeavor with her upcoming exhibition, Thank You for Being with Us. This highly anticipated showcase will open on October 18, coinciding with the Limassol Art Walks happening that same weekend. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience extended opening hours throughout the event, with the exhibition continuing until November 16.
For this new body of work, Savvidou shifts her artistic focus to an unexpected subject—the plastic bag. Described by the exhibition organizers as a “rejected icon of human progress,” the plastic bag serves as the central symbol in Savvidou’s exploration of the human experience.
According to the exhibition’s curators, the show is not simply a commentary on environmental issues. Instead, Thank You for Being with Us delves into the deeper questions of what it means to be human, particularly the regrets we may confront at the metaphorical “checkout counter” of life. Savvidou uses the plastic bag as a representation of humanity’s dual nature—our capacity for creativity and innovation, coupled with a tendency to avoid accountability for the very things we create. Once praised for its practicality, the plastic bag now stands as a reflection of both our triumphs and our shortcomings.
Through this exhibition, Savvidou examines the complex interplay between creation and consequence. It is not confined to ecological concerns but instead functions as a metaphor for the human condition. What do we collect over the course of our lives? What do we leave behind, physically and emotionally? Through her artwork, Savvidou urges viewers to confront the emotional and material “baggage” we often carry without acknowledgment and to consider the lasting impact of our actions and decisions.
With a blend of humor and vulnerability, the artist presents a series of thought-provoking visuals that invite viewers to reflect on their place in the world and the narratives that shape their lives.
