This month, Limassol’s vibrant art scene is set to become even more dynamic with the launch of several art exhibitions. Among these exciting events is Travels with Renoir, an exhibition hosted by Pylon Art & Culture, which runs from October 18 to December 28. The exhibition coincides with the highly anticipated Limassol Art Walks, a three-day cultural event taking place on November 18, 19, and 20, aimed at showcasing the city’s rich artistic heritage.
Olympios’ Artistic Tribute to Renoir
In Travels with Renoir, Cypriot artist Lefteris Olympios introduces his latest artistic exploration, featuring a collection of 26 ink drawings and 27 oil paintings. This body of work serves as a creative dialogue with the iconic Children series by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Interestingly, Olympios began painting these portraits in his childhood, and the exhibition reflects his long-standing connection to Renoir’s work.
“I see Renoir as my first instructor in art,” Olympios explains. “When I was around 10 or 11 years old, I started replicating his paintings using pencil and color. My father had bought me a small book of children’s portraits by Renoir from a local bookstore, and without knowing who Renoir was, I used to pronounce his name as ‘Renoyr.’”
Now, decades later, Olympios revisits Renoir’s work, not with the intent of replication, but to reimagine and reinterpret it through his own artistic lens. “This time, I’m not copying his works like I did as a child,” says Olympios. “I retain the themes from the paintings I originally encountered, but I infuse them with my own personal style and perspective.”
