The 3rd Cyprus Choreography Showcase Set for This Week
The vibrant city of Limassol is about to be swept off its feet with the much-anticipated arrival of the Cyprus Choreography Showcase (SΧΚ), now in its third edition. This prestigious event aims to highlight the talents of local choreographers while positioning Cyprus on the global dance scene. Co-organised by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Rialto Theatre, the showcase is held every two years, with the latest edition scheduled for this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
A Platform for Cypriot Dance on the World Stage
With its ongoing mission to promote Cypriot contemporary culture internationally, the Choreography Showcase has curated a diverse and engaging lineup of dance performances. Over three days, the event will offer audiences an opportunity to experience the rich variety of Cypriot choreography, while providing a platform for local artists to gain greater visibility abroad.
“The SXK has become a key event in Cyprus, offering a stage for selected dance productions conceived and created locally over the past two years,” say the organisers. “It allows Cyprus-based choreographers to present their works to international festival representatives and artistic directors, facilitating collaborations and enhancing the possibility of their work being showcased on the global dance circuit.”
Not only does this showcase support the international promotion of these talented choreographers, but it also gives local audiences the chance to revisit some of the most outstanding choreographic productions from recent years.
A Three-Day Celebration of Dance
The event will open with an exciting lineup of performances on day one. Panayiotis Tofi will present Mon Otage at 8:30 pm, followed by Aneesha’s Redemption Street at 9:00 pm, and Lia Haraki’s CHANNELS will close out the evening.
Day two will continue with equally powerful performances, featuring Amfidromo Chorotheatro and Elena Christodoulidou’s Chameleon, Milena Ugren Koulas and Stylish Junkies Collective’s In Memory Of…, Harry Koushos’ 98 y.o., and Asomates Dynameis/Andromachi Dimitriadou Lindahl’s Acheiropoietos.
On the final day, the audience can look forward to performances by Elena Antoniou with her piece LANDSCAPE, Diamanto Hadjizacharia’s A Dance for the End of the World, Alexis Vassiliou’s THIRAMA, and Panos Malactos’ Are you OKAY?.
Meanwhile: Parallel Events and More
Adding to the dynamic atmosphere, a series of parallel events under the title Meanwhile will run alongside the showcase. These events, organised by Dance House Lemesos, Dance House Lefkosia, and Nea Kinisi, will include roundtable discussions, artist collaborations, and other events that were selected through an open call. The parallel events will take place on Saturday and Sunday as the showcase reaches its finale.
The organisers of Meanwhile have focused on presenting works designed for alternative performance spaces, supporting new and experimental forms of choreographic expression. This year’s programme includes works that have emerged from personal initiatives, residency programmes, and independent festivals, culminating in a moderated discussion on the relevance of Cypriot choreography in contemporary European dance.
