Festival season continues to thrive this summer with local celebrations highlighting the unique produce and traditions of Cyprus. In the coming days and weeks, three festivals will honor the seasonal fruits, trees, and nuts in true Cypriot style—with music, food, and village festivities.
Watermelon Dance in Akaki Village
Kicking off the festivities on Friday, the Watermelon Dance (O Horos tou Karpouziou) returns to Akaki village to celebrate the quintessential summer fruit. Watermelons from the region will take center stage, accompanied by ice-cold cocktails and other local produce.
This festival aims to promote Akaki’s watermelon farmers and showcase the village’s renowned watermelon spoon sweet. The evening will feature entertainment by the musical ensemble Ta Kefia, alongside a variety of food and drinks.
Hazel Tree Fest in Platanistasa Village
Next, Platanistasa village will host the annual Hazel Tree Fest, a two-day event on Saturday and Sunday. Festivalgoers can enjoy guided tours of the hazel tree forest, music and dance programs, a market with local creations and products, and visits to village landmarks.
Peach Festival in Kato Mylos
In August, Kato Mylos will celebrate its annual Peach Festival. On August 17, the old elementary school and the Rodakinio Cultural Centre will be filled with peach delights. Chef Chryso Lefou will demonstrate how to make peach jam, peach liqueur, and fluffy pies. The festival will also feature bread-making activities, a shadow theatre performance, and live music by local artists.
