Get ready for a vibrant celebration of tradition and cultural heritage through the arts! This September, Larnaca will once again come alive with the colors and rhythms of the 17th Mediterranean Folklore Dance Festival, showcasing traditional costumes, dances, songs, and melodies from the Mediterranean region and beyond.
A Celebration of Tradition
From September 13 to 17, Larnaca’s seafront and old town will be buzzing with festive energy. The festival will feature over 800 dancers, musicians, artists, and singers, all coming together to celebrate traditions from around the world. This year’s festival will host groups from Greece, Rhodes, Nisyros, Albania, Costa Rica, Egypt, Latvia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Pontus, Georgia, and Armenia. Additionally, 16 groups from Cyprus will participate, including seven choirs, four bands, and two majorette teams.
Opening Ceremony and Parade
The festival kicks off on September 13 with a grand opening ceremony featuring a vibrant parade of festival groups. The procession will start at 7 pm from the police station on Athenon Avenue, passing by the castle and culminating at the Finikoudes seafront stage. The event will also feature performances by the Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra of Larnaca Municipality and the Girl Guides Majorettes Association of Limassol.
A Cultural Melting Pot
Festival organizers highlight the importance of this event, saying, “Despite financial challenges, both the groups and their countries are eager to participate in this significant celebration. This enthusiasm drives us to continue, promoting the cultural heritage of Cyprus.” The festival promises a colorful display of live music, traditional costumes, and dance, providing a joyful experience for both locals and visitors.
Engaging the Community
Every year, the festival attracts around 50,000 spectators to the performances at Finikoudes. It also includes a multicultural education program, organized by the Cultural Folklore Group of Nicosia, allowing high school students to learn about the cultures, customs, and traditions of neighboring countries.
Schedule of Events
The festivities will continue after the opening parade with performances showcasing the diverse cultures represented at the festival. On Saturday morning, a parade and dance performances will take place in the main streets of Larnaca and the squares of Saint Lazarus and Ermou at 10:30 am. Evening parades will lead to more shows at the Finikoudes stage, immersing Larnaca in the vibrant rhythms of tradition throughout the festival.
