What’s On This Week at the Constantia Summer Movie Marathon
As Nicosia experiences a quieter week with many residents retreating to cooler parts of the island, those remaining in the city will have a more tranquil experience. Although many restaurants, shops, and bars are taking a break for the summer, there are still events to enjoy for those staying behind. One such event is the Constantia Summer Movie Marathon, offering a selection of five films from the international and independent cinema world this week.
Wednesday: La Chimera
The week kicks off on Wednesday with the Italian comedy-drama La Chimera. The film follows the story of a British looter entangled in an international network of stolen Etruscan artefacts during the 1980s. As with all the screenings at the Constantia open-air theatre, the film starts at 9pm and includes Greek subtitles.
Thursday: Sharing an Island
On Thursday, the award-winning Cypriot documentary Sharing an Island will be shown. This documentary follows six young Cypriots—three Greek Cypriots from the south of the buffer zone and three Turkish Cypriots from the north—who come together to share a house for five days. Their journey across divided Cyprus sparks discussions about history, shared stories, and hopes for the future.
Friday: Fallen Leaves
Friday night brings the screening of the award-winning comedy-drama-romance Fallen Leaves. Set in modern-day Helsinki, the film tells the story of two lonely souls who meet by chance in a karaoke bar. Their journey toward love is filled with obstacles, including lost phone numbers, mistaken addresses, and even a charming stray dog.
Saturday: Black Stone
The Greek film Black Stone is next on the schedule, airing on Saturday. It follows Haroula, a concerned mother who teams up with her son and a friendly taxi driver to find her other son, a civil servant accused of fraud, who has been missing for two days. The film will also be screened again on September 8.
Sunday: Murderess
Wrapping up this week’s outdoor cinema lineup on Sunday is the acclaimed Greek film Murderess. Based on the classic story by Alexandros Papadiamantis, the film is set on a remote Greek island around the year 1900. It tells the story of Hadoula, a woman struggling to survive within a patriarchal society while dealing with her own mother’s rejection.
