As part of its mission to broaden the cultural landscape in Cyprus, Nicosia 2030, a candidate for the European Capital of Culture, proudly presents a mesmerizing triptych of contemporary dance at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. This event will showcase two iconic works by the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch alongside a captivating piece by Germaine Acogny, often referred to as the ‘mother of modern African dance.’ These performances are a highlight of the Nicosia International Festival 2024, running from October 28 to November 2.
Pina Bausch and Germaine Acogny Take Center Stage
The triptych opens with Philips 836 887 DSY, a rare solo choreography from Pina Bausch’s early career, created in 1971. The piece, accompanied by music from renowned French electronic composer Pierre Henry, was originally performed by Bausch herself. This year, it will be revived and performed by the talented Eva Pageix.
The second performance, Homage to the Ancestors, is a deeply personal solo choreographed and performed by Germaine Acogny. This piece reflects on Acogny’s African heritage, seamlessly blending traditional African rituals with the essence of contemporary dance. Having been showcased exclusively in Benin in 2023, this performance will now make its European debut in Nicosia.
The evening concludes with Pina Bausch’s monumental choreography of The Rite of Spring, set to the powerful composition by Igor Stravinsky. This remarkable production brings together a cast of over 30 dancers from 14 different African nations, creating a performance of unmatched scale and intensity on the stage of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.
A Global Success: Dance Reaches New Heights
Since its debut in 2022, the triptych—Philips 836 887 DSY, Homage to the Ancestors, and The Rite of Spring—has captivated audiences worldwide. With performances across Europe, the USA, and the UK, it has been seen by more than 100,000 spectators in 15 countries. Following its performances in Cyprus, the tour will move on to China before concluding in London.
