This season, Nicosia is a vibrant hub for artistic expression, offering a wealth of exhibitions that delve into the island’s rich history and culture. Among the highlights is the AG Leventis Gallery’s contemporary art showcase, Reflections, running alongside the iconic exhibition Kanthos: The Sharp Edges of History.
A Call for Contemporary Art
The Reflections exhibition is the result of a recent Call for Art – Contemporary Art Competition, organized by the AG Leventis Gallery. This competition invited Cypriot artists to create works inspired by the island’s historical and cultural memory, particularly the tragic events of its colonial and post-colonial eras that led to its division.
From a pool of 134 submissions, the selection committee chose nine exceptional artists whose works are now on display. These artists include Alev Adil, Marina Genadieva, Kika Ioannidou and Argyro Nicolaou, Andreas Kalli, Petros Kourtellaris, Eleni Mouzourou (in collaboration with Natis/Hasan Aksaygın), Eleni Odysseos, Michalis Papamichael, and Andria Zachariou.
Exploring Memory and Trauma
The exhibition draws on the concept of post-memory, which examines the connection between later generations and the collective trauma experienced by their predecessors. Through their art, the featured artists seek to shed light on Cyprus’ complex past, offering new perspectives on identity, memory, and shared history.
Their pieces are carefully integrated into the gallery’s narrative, creating a dynamic dialogue between the Reflections exhibition and the Kanthos: The Sharp Edges of History exhibit. The latter explores similar themes through the lens of Telemachos Kanthos, a pioneering figure in Cypriot art, whose work also grapples with the island’s turbulent history.
A Collaborative Curatorial Effort
Curated by Katerina Stephanides, Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, and Myrto Hatzaki, the exhibition has been meticulously designed to both captivate and provoke thought. Visitors are encouraged to challenge their perceptions of history and identity while exploring new ways to engage with Cyprus’ cultural heritage.
