This summer, the courtyard of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation will once again be transformed into an outdoor cinema, showcasing unique productions from Cypriot filmmakers in collaboration with The Friends of Cinema Society. There will be five free film nights in August and September, starting on Thursday.
Kid-Friendly Adventure
The season kicks off with the children’s adventure film Little Nicholas and The Treasure Hunt. This delightful movie follows nine-year-old Nicholas, whose world is turned upside down when his family must relocate to the south of France for his father’s job. Determined not to lose his friends, Nicholas devises a grand plan involving a treasure hunt to avoid the move.
Cypriot Comedy
Next up, on August 8, is the critically acclaimed Cypriot film Smuggling Hendrix. Set in the divided city of Nicosia, this comedy satirizes the absurdities of everyday life in the region without attempting to address the Cyprus problem directly. The plot centers on Yiannis, whose dog escapes to the occupied territories, forcing him into a series of bizarre and humorous situations to retrieve his pet.
More Nicholas Adventures
On August 29, the outdoor cinema will continue with another tale of Little Nicholas, this time in Little Nicholas Goes on Holiday. The film begins at the end of the school year as Nicholas bids farewell to his classmates and books, eagerly anticipating a fun-filled summer vacation.
Hollywood in Cyprus
In September, the cinema series will feature The Beloved, starring actress Raquel Welch alongside Cypriot actors and extras. Filmed in Cyprus in 1970 in the village of Karmi in Keryneia, the movie features music by Yiannis Markopoulos. The story follows a Cypriot man living in London who returns home to resolve inheritance issues and falls in love with a married woman who was his childhood friend. This film will be screened on September 18.
Documentary Screening
The following night, a documentary titled The Beloved Days will be shown. This film provides a glimpse into the era when Cyprus had a promising future as a film destination, a future that was abruptly halted by the Turkish invasion of 1974. The documentary offers a kaleidoscopic view of the social realities of the time and the dramatic changes the island experienced after the invasion.
Event Details
All screenings at the courtyard will begin at 8:30 pm, with the exception of the children’s films, which will start at 8 pm.
