The eagerly awaited Rialto Cinema Nights are back, transforming the SEK parking area behind the Rialto Theatre into a charming open-air cinema. From Wednesday to the following Tuesday, film enthusiasts in Limassol will be treated to a diverse selection of internationally acclaimed films that have resonated with audiences and critics alike.
Opening Night with French Cinema
Kicking off the event on Wednesday is the French film Un Triomphe, directed by Emmanuel Courcol. This critically acclaimed film, which was an official selection at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, also won the Best European Comedy Award from the European Film Academy. The film, a touching and humorous tale inspired by true events, stars the Cesar-winning actor Kad Merad and offers a profound exploration of human nature.
American Drama Takes the Stage
On Friday, the American film Fremont will be showcased. Directed by Babak Jalali, this film has garnered several prestigious awards, including the Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary, the Jury Prize at the Deauville Film Festival, and the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. The plot follows Donya, a former translator for the US military in Afghanistan, who now works at a fortune cookie factory. Struggling to rebuild her life, she makes a life-changing decision to send out a special message in one of the cookies.
French Drama on Saturday Night
This Saturday, another French film, Innocent, will be screened. Nominated for 11 Cesar Awards, this drama focuses on a man’s desperate attempt to protect his mother, who is about to marry a convicted robber. The film delves into themes of family, trust, and redemption.
Greek Cinema Next Week
The following week’s screenings start on Monday with the Greek film Magnetic Field, directed by Yiorgos Goussis. This film, which won six awards at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and five IRIS – Greek Film Academy Awards, follows Elena, a woman on a journey to an unknown destination. Along the way, she encounters Antonis, and together they embark on a quest across Kefalonia to find the perfect spot to bury a mysterious metal box.
A French Finale
The final screening on September 10 features the French production Masquerade by Nicolas Bedos. The story centers on Adrien, a former dancer turned escort after a career-ending accident. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Margot and falls in love, setting off a chain of events that upend his carefully constructed world.
This lineup concludes the Rialto Cinema Nights for 2024, but there’s plenty more to look forward to at the Limassol theatre as September promises a rich cultural agenda.
