Paphos is set to burst into life with its inaugural Pafos International Street Festival, taking place this August and September. From August 26 to September 1, the city will come alive with a week of entertainment, family fun, and vibrant performances.
Festival Highlights
Throughout the festival’s seven days, Paphos will host a series of exciting performances from international artists across seven unique locations. Each evening will feature up to 24 performances, ranging from acrobatics and circus acts to comedy, clowning, music, and dance.
This festival is free of charge to attend. Instead of buying tickets, attendees are encouraged to contribute directly to the performers at the end of their shows. As the organizers explain, “Performing in public places for tips,” a tradition known as busking, has ancient roots. Historically, audiences would place their contributions in a hat passed around during performances. Today, street performers around the globe continue this practice, with appreciative passersby offering donations as their primary form of payment.
A Global Celebration of Street Art
Festival-goers will have the chance to experience performances by talented artists from countries including the USA, Malaysia, Australia, Ghana, Brazil, France, and Argentina. This event offers Cyprus audiences a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the diverse world of street performance.
The festival is the brainchild of Richard Handley and Paphos Friends. Richard, a British comic entertainer, has graced numerous festivals across Europe, Australasia, and the Middle East. Joining him are Jane Kayantas, a dedicated arts facilitator and supporter, and Tonie Scott, a former school principal and current steward team leader at the renowned Glastonbury Festival. With support from local businesses and the Municipality of Paphos, the festival’s debut is set to be an exciting success.
Opening Celebration
The festival kicks off with a grand opening procession on August 26, from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM. The procession will feature a dazzling array of artists including acrobats, fire performers, jugglers, clowns, stilt walkers, musicians, dancers, and magicians. Starting at Bania and concluding at Paphos Castle, this procession will mark the beginning of a week filled with street art, fun, and enchantment.
