An exciting outdoor photography exhibition has opened in Paphos, offering a unique opportunity for both locals and tourists to enjoy contemporary art in an unconventional setting. Titled “The Wall”, this exhibition is hosted on a public wall at Agios Kendeas Square and will be displayed for an impressive 11 months. The exhibition is organized by the Paphos branch of the Cyprus Photographic Society (CPS).
Promoting Photography for All
The President of the Paphos CPS, Thanos Savvides, explained that the aim of the Photomarathon—the event linked to the exhibition—is to encourage social participation and make photography accessible to a broader audience. He noted that this initiative is not only a challenge for photographers but also for individuals who may not have direct engagement with the art form but are eager to connect with it on some level.
A Window into International Photography
Savvides also emphasized that The Wall represents one of the CPS’s significant international initiatives. Over the past eight years, this initiative has been successful in promoting Paphos as a cultural hub, showcasing international contemporary photography to the city’s residents and visitors. The exhibition aims to transform an ordinary public space into an extraordinary art venue, bringing photography to the public eye outside the traditional confines of galleries and museums.
A Creative Challenge
This year’s photography competition posed an intriguing challenge for participants: to capture four distinct themes within a tight timeframe of just four hours. Following an open call, photographers from around the world submitted their interpretations of the Urban Environment or Street Photography themes. The top 30 photographs were selected for display, making up the collection that now adorns the public wall.
A Global Collection
The 2024 exhibition features work from 15 countries, highlighting the global appeal of the event. Photographers from countries such as Cyprus, Greece, the USA, Finland, Slovakia, the Philippines, Australia, France, Germany, Poland, and the UK have their works proudly displayed, adding a diverse range of perspectives and styles to the exhibition.
