The Poetry Moves International Festival, which saw great success during its debut in Nicosia last year, is returning in 2024. This multidisciplinary arts festival, with poetry as its focal point, will once again celebrate poetry, literature, and the arts, exploring the connections and interactions between these forms of creative expression.
Festival Kickoff and Exhibitions
The Poetry Moves International Festival 2024 is set to commence on October 9 at MS Viewpoint Studios in Nicosia, starting with the inauguration of a dual photography exhibition. This includes the solo show Views from the Window by Nelly Tragousti (Greece/Germany) and PhOETRY II, an exhibition featuring 30 photographs selected from the festival’s global open call competition.
Honoring History and Addressing Global Crises
This year’s festival takes on a special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Cyprus. With the world currently facing numerous humanitarian crises, wars, and displacement, the festival has chosen Windows as its central theme. This theme reflects on the global rise in displacement and the ongoing struggles of humanity.
According to the festival organizers, “Windows” serve as metaphors, representing hope, reflection, and melancholy. They symbolize both protection and isolation while also acting as a bridge between two worlds, the internal and the external.
Performances, Readings, and Artistic Events
Between October 9 and October 24, the festival will feature a variety of events, including poetry readings, recitals, and a poetic jazz showcase. There will also be performances by Cypriot composers, whose works are inspired by poetry, as well as dance solos. The festival’s activities will take place at several iconic venues across Nicosia, such as Eleftheria Square, Arte Music Academy, and the Egomio Cultural Centre.
