The highly anticipated Queer Wave Film Festival is back for its fifth edition, set to take place from September 20 to 29 at NiMAC (Nicosia Municipal Arts Center). Over the course of ten days, the festival will showcase a diverse array of films, celebrating the richness of LGBTQIA+ cinema.
A Packed Programme of Screenings and Premieres
This year’s event promises an exciting lineup of 20 feature films and more than 50 Cyprus premieres, ranging from shorts to full-length features. Many of these films have earned critical acclaim at renowned international festivals, including Venice, Berlin, Locarno, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Clermont-Ferrand.
Cypriot Filmmakers and Local Talent
The festival will also shine a spotlight on local talent, with six short films from Cypriot filmmakers included in the programme. In addition to the film screenings, Queer Wave 2024 will host a series of parallel events, featuring local artists from all across Cyprus, celebrating creativity across cultural boundaries.
Music, Performances, and More
Beyond the films, festival-goers can enjoy a variety of music performances, DJ sets, drag shows, and experimental video art. These dynamic events will further enhance the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, making it a truly unique celebration of queer culture.
Workshops and Lectures by International Experts
For the first time, Queer Wave will include workshops and lectures presented by industry professionals from Poland, France, and Greece. These sessions will explore themes of queer memory and the role of cinema in capturing personal and collective LGBTQIA+ experiences. Films that explore queer history, fiction reimagining historical events, and documentaries using archival footage will be key elements of this year’s festival.
Queer History and Archiving Exhibition
Coinciding with the festival’s opening, an exhibition titled “nono, bad timing! archiving queer times and spaces” will debut on Friday, September 20. This exhibition will delve into queer history and the ongoing effort to systematically archive the queer experience in Cyprus.
