A new festival is set to breathe life into one of Limassol’s most storied neighborhoods next weekend, as the community comes together to uncover its oral histories, photographs, and hidden treasures. From October 25 to 27, the “Neighborhood of Cine Volos Festival” will showcase the unique heritage of the area through a series of engaging and participatory activities.
Organized by the MITOS Centre for Performing Arts, this festival serves as a platform for interdisciplinary social engagement, promoting community interaction through art and culture. The festival will highlight the role of public spaces as places for gathering and exchanging stories, fostering connections between locals and visitors alike.
At its core, the festival aims to gather and preserve the stories, images, and memories of the neighborhood, with the creation of the first-ever Neighborhood Stories Archive as its ultimate goal. MITOS has developed a comprehensive and sustainable plan, partnering with a diverse group of artists and experts to orchestrate pre-festival workshops, the three-day festival itself, and post-festival follow-up events.
A Space for Everyone
The festival invites the local community and visitors to immerse themselves in a range of free activities. The event will utilize several important locations in the neighborhood, including the Cine Volos Park, the Adults Employment Centre, the courtyard of the Limassol Municipality Food Bank, and the parking lot of the Sklavenitis supermarket.
The Legacy of Cine Volos
This part of Limassol is steeped in history, with the area named after the famous Cine Volos cinema. Built in the 1950s by Antonis Volos, in collaboration with architect Fotis Kolakides, the cinema operated with both winter and summer halls until 1985. The neighborhood originally attracted residents from Paphos and the Limassol district, drawn by the industrial growth in the Tsiflikoudia area. Over time, waves of refugees and immigrants added to the rich cultural tapestry of the community. Today, urban redevelopment has introduced new dynamics and stories waiting to be told.
Festival Highlights
Throughout the three days, participants can enjoy a wide variety of activities, including guided architectural walks, outdoor film screenings, and discussions with professors over coffee. Visitors can also listen to open mic stories, join bingo games, watch live performances, explore art installations, and even take part in a community Sunday lunch.
