Matete Martini is set to unveil her inaugural solo exhibition in Cyprus this May, with the showcase commencing next week at the Riana Raouna Gallery situated in downtown Nicosia. Entitled “Hug Each Other Again,” the exhibition is scheduled to run from May 23 to June 5, presenting a fresh collection of canvas paintings, photographs, and paper drawings.
Centered on the theme of intimacy, both physical and emotional, the exhibition delves into the significance of embracing one another, serving as a conduit for acceptance and self-awareness. Drawing inspiration from the philosophical insights of Maurice Merlau-Ponty, the showcase posits the body not merely as a biological entity but as a defining aspect of one’s experience and connection with the world.
Exploring various facets such as anatomy, touch, and emotion, the concept of a hug is depicted through diverse mediums including brushstrokes, canvas sprays, and photography. Additionally, the exhibition ventures into the multifaceted concept of ‘home,’ examining the intricacies of feeling secure in modern society.
Contextually poignant, the exhibition holds particular significance in Nicosia, a city marked by division, symbolically addressing the absence of embrace between individuals and prompting viewers to contemplate the importance of acceptance and unity.
