A captivating production by the National Theatre of Greece is set to take center stage at the Ancient Curium. This exceptional performance will be held during the first week of August, featuring an outstanding cast of 32 actors. Directed by the internationally renowned Greek director and educator, Theodoros Terzopoulos, this marks his first collaboration with the theatre company. Their combined efforts bring to life Aeschylus’ Oresteia, the only extant trilogy of ancient Greek drama and the last surviving work of the tragic poet.
Performances at Ancient Curium
The production will be presented on August 2 and 3, showcasing the trilogy’s timeless themes. Written in 458 BC amidst significant social and political turmoil, Aeschylus introduced Oresteia at the Great Dionysia, just two years prior to his death.
Aeschylus’ Timeless Myth
Aeschylus draws from the myth of the House of Atreus, focusing on the devastating curse afflicting the family. The trilogy narrates the tragic downfall of Orestes, affecting all characters and the Chorus through a series of events: from destabilization to deadlock, and ultimately to madness.
Terzopoulos’ Unique Direction
Through his acclaimed Method, Terzopoulos delivers a unique directorial vision, aiming to delve deeply into the myth of Oresteia and explore the unexpected, the unusual, and the paradoxical.
