Celebrating Women and Art in July
This July, KTIRION 53—a dedicated space for nurturing and showcasing artistic talent—launches its residency program, ROOMS, featuring the remarkable works of three Cypriot women artists. By exclusively selecting female artists for this inaugural program, KTIRION 53 emphasizes its commitment to gender equality and elevating women’s voices in the arts. This initiative not only underscores the artistic and cultural contributions of women but also provides a platform for them to share their unique perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Throughout July, the new venue in the historic heart of Nicosia will host three distinctive performances.
Championing Women’s Roles in Contemporary Society
Beyond merely supporting female artists, this residency sparks a broader dialogue on the status of women in modern Cypriot society. By questioning traditional depictions of women, the program invites fresh and thought-provoking viewpoints. Key themes like female identity and diversity in art will be thoroughly explored.
Sweet Nightmare by Nasia Kelepeshi
The first performance, Sweet Nightmare, by Nasia Kelepeshi, is scheduled for July 16. This piece portrays a woman’s struggle to conform to the expectations of a patriarchal society. Using a combination of graceful and sensual movements, objects, and music, Kelepeshi crafts compelling and contrasting on-stage images that delve into this complex theme.
Whose Are You? by Natalia Panayiotou
On July 18, actress and performer Natalia Panayiotou will present Whose Are You?. This solo performance employs a creative theatrical approach to question how identity, life choices, and destinies are shaped. Panayiotou challenges ingrained patriarchal notions, examining what it means to be a woman today. She probes whether our identity is rooted in the names and histories we inherit from childhood and how these elements influence our paths. Using humor, sarcasm, and a direct style, her performance seeks to foster a meaningful dialogue between the performer and the audience.
C’est La Vie by Myri Argyrou
The final act of the residency program, C’est La Vie by Myri Argyrou, will be showcased on July 25. This narrative follows the journey of a young girl from childhood to womanhood, focusing on her efforts to overcome sexism and societal stereotypes that dictate how women should think and behave.
