Could it even be deemed a proper summer sans the enchanting melodies of live music nights? This month, an abundance of musical treats awaits across the entire expanse of the country. The upcoming week at Sarah’s Jazz Club in Nicosia promises a soul-stirring performance by Alexis Sunder, a talented Cypriot singer-songwriter, accompanied by his band, the Sundercats.
This Friday night, Sunder, renowned for his eclectic blend of blue-eyed soul, jazz, funk, disco, and pop, will grace the stage, supported by his steadfast comrades Andreas Epaminonda on guitar, Pavlos Daniel Loukaides on piano, Andreas Papageorgiou on bass, and Fragkiskos Petrides on drums.
The evocative melodies of Café Aman will come alive at the Municipal Limassol Gardens on June 12th, as Yiannis Dionysiou and the Aman Rembetiko ensemble take the audience on a mesmerizing journey. Through their performance, they will delve into the enchanting realm of rembetiko music, originating from the pre-war Greek cafés of major urban hubs in Asia Minor, particularly Constantinople and Smyrna. These cafés birthed the intense musical tradition of the Asia Minor Greeks, which, post-1922, found its way to the shores of Piraeus, igniting the rembetiko music movement embraced fervently by the youth of Greece and Cyprus to this day.
Following shortly after, the Technopolis 20 Classics concert series will present the Alpine Brass Quintet at the Paphos Ancient Odeon on June 16th. This quintet of virtuoso musicians will regale the audience with a diverse repertoire spanning vibrant South American rhythms to the brilliance of Baroque and the charm of Renaissance music.
As the month progresses, a plethora of performances will continue the celebration, marking World Music Day with 250 children gracing the stage alongside local bands performing in neighborhood bars. Brace yourself for a summer filled with music!
