Performance reminiscent of serial killings in Cyprus graces the headlines, shifting the spotlight to a haunting theatrical endeavor in Sia. While a notorious red lake elsewhere on the island once dominated news cycles with the chilling tale of local women’s murders, this upcoming production delves into the grim reality of certain facets of Cypriot culture, aiming to offer insight into the societal fabric.
Renowned playwright Giorgos Trillidis and director Paris Erotokritou reunite following the success of “Nitsa” to present “The Only Thing You Need to Know About Derrida,” a response to the shocking crimes against foreign women that shook the island. Through this theatrical piece, they seek to dissect modern Cypriot social dynamics.
Performed in Greek, the play unfolds in four scenes, with the silent presence of the red lake in Sia serving as a central motif. This location, laden with the weight of collective memory and economic significance, is transformed into a grand theatrical setting, engaging the audience—both citizens and residents—in a profound exploration.
Featuring a diverse ensemble of actors, technicians, and contributors, including Filipino amateurs who seamlessly integrate their native language, this ambitious production promises a multi-dimensional experience blending site-specific performance, immersive theatre, and live filming.
Initially premiering as part of the Cyprus International Theatre Festival on June 14, 15, and 16, tickets for these dates are already sold out. However, additional performances will run until June 30, offering opportunities on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
