The art landscape of Cyprus is about to take a significant leap forward in 2025 with the debut of a groundbreaking event that aims to spotlight the island on the global art stage. VIMA, the inaugural international contemporary art fair in Cyprus, will make its debut in Limassol from May 16 to 18, 2025. Set in a repurposed industrial building with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea—originally part of one of Cyprus’ oldest wineries—this event promises to be a landmark moment for the local and regional art scene.
A Celebration of Contemporary Art
VIMA will place a spotlight on contemporary art from Cyprus and neighboring Mediterranean countries, celebrating the rich and diverse cultures of the coastal region. With a vision for inclusivity and accessibility, the art fair seeks to unite local and international artistic communities. In addition to highlighting the work of Cypriot artists and galleries, VIMA will host artistic and curatorial exchanges, inviting participation from emerging and established galleries as well as artist-run spaces.
The fair aspires to provide a comprehensive showcase of contemporary art, fostering connections across borders while creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration. By inviting both local and international perspectives, VIMA positions itself as a hub for discoveries and fresh ideas, blending innovative practices with established traditions.
Exclusive Participation and Curatorial Excellence
Participation in VIMA is by invitation, ensuring a curated and high-quality experience for attendees. Each year, an international curator will undertake a residency in Cyprus, working closely with regional artists. This initiative aims to foster global exchanges while nurturing local talent, creating a platform for cultural dialogue and artistic growth.
The inaugural fair’s participants and curatorial projects will be announced in the coming months, promising an exciting lineup of artistic talent and creative programming.
The Vision Behind VIMA
VIMA is the brainchild of Edgar Gadzhiev, Lara Kotreleva, and Nadezhda Zinovskaya, supported by a committee of prominent figures in Cyprus’ art scene. Key contributors include:
- Alexandros Diogenous: Founder of Pylon Art & Culture and Co-founder of Limassol Art Walks.
- Tasos Stylianou: Gallerist, Director, and Co-founder of Limassol Art Walks.
- Andre Zivanari: Founder and Director of Point Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia.
The name VIMA—derived from the Greek word meaning “step” or “platform”—embodies the event’s mission to serve as a bridge between Cyprus’ burgeoning art ecosystem and its neighboring regions. Positioned at the crossroads of East and West, VIMA aspires to cultivate a unique social space that promotes interaction, collaboration, and inclusivity.
Looking Ahead
As excitement builds for this pioneering event, more details about the fair’s program, participating galleries, and featured artists will be unveiled closer to its launch. VIMA’s goal is to offer a meaningful and accessible entry point for participants and audiences alike, fostering diverse cultural exchanges and strengthening Cyprus’ role in the international art scene.
