In its second week, the Nicosia International Festival continues to bring excitement and culture to the capital. This week features an energetic concert by a Cuban band and a thought-provoking photography exhibition that will captivate the city’s residents.
Concert of the Week: Maykel Blanco Y Su Salsa Mayor
The most anticipated event of the week is the performance by Maykel Blanco Y Su Salsa Mayor, a well-known Cuban band, set to take place on Wednesday evening. After a memorable concert two years ago by the Cuban group Septeto Santiaguero, the rhythms of Cuban salsa are returning to Nicosia. This time, the renowned Maykel Blanco and his multi-member group will take the stage once again to deliver an unforgettable night filled with upbeat Cuban music. The concert is scheduled for 8:30 PM at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, and it promises to be a one-night-only performance not to be missed.
Face Forward…Into My Home: A Photography Exhibition
Running alongside the musical performances is the moving photography exhibition titled Face Forward…Into My Home. This exhibition, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, is presented by Nicosia 2030 in collaboration with refugees and migrants who have found a new home in Cyprus after being displaced from their countries. The exhibition features photographic portraits and personal stories of these individuals, offering a deep insight into their experiences of starting over. The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and also for an hour before each performance at the theatre.
The portraits, captured by photographer Yiannis Kourtoglou, are the outcome of an integration project organised by Nicosia 2030 in partnership with the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, with support from the UNHCR Cyprus. The exhibition will remain on display until December 31, giving visitors ample time to engage with the stories of migrants and refugees in Cyprus.
