As we welcome October, the first weekend of the month is filled with exciting events across Cyprus. From Oktoberfest celebrations to art exhibitions, street festivals, book events, and flea markets, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday offer a variety of activities to enjoy as a new season unfolds.
Friday’s Highlights: New Exhibitions in Nicosia
Two Art Exhibitions are set to kick off the weekend in Nicosia on Friday night. At the Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos, local photographer Emma Louise Charalambous will unveil her debut solo exhibition, titled Amensalism. The exhibition opens at 7 pm and will be on display until October 25, offering visitors a glimpse into Charalambous’ artistic vision.
Meanwhile, at The Common Room (located next to Prozak), the second edition of the Mental Echoes group exhibition will take place. This event brings together seven local artists (Andri Andreou, Giorgos Papakonstantinou, Iacovos Loizou, Nurtane Karagil, Orestis Kalvaris, Souzana Petri, and Twenty Three) to explore themes related to mental health and how society interacts with this important issue. The exhibition, which features a wide range of artistic mediums, will run until October 14, and each artist will present their unique perspective on the subject.
Oktoberfest in Trimiklini: A Taste of Bavaria
If you’re in the mood for some Oktoberfest vibes this weekend, head over to John’s Restaurant in Trimiklini on Friday night. Bierstein Blasmusik, a German band known for its Oompah style, will provide an evening of authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest music. Their performance will include traditional instruments such as clarinets, trumpets, a trombone, euphonium, tuba, accordion, and drums, delivering a true taste of German festival culture.
Nicosia Book Fest: A Literary Celebration
Book lovers won’t want to miss the 9th edition of the Nicosia Book Fest, taking place this Saturday and Sunday at Acropolis Park. This year, the festival shines a spotlight on Latin American literature, offering a range of book-related events that explore the works of prominent literary figures from the region. In addition to the literary discussions, there will be live performances celebrating Latin American culture.
One highlight of the festival is the Cuban Music Street Party, organized by the Embassy of Cuba. On Saturday night at 9:30 pm, the local band Havana Vitral will bring the vibrant rhythms of Cuba to Nicosia with an energetic performance that promises to get everyone dancing.
Misfit Sundays: Art, Music, and Vintage Finds
For those who love art, music, and unique treasures, Misfit Sundays return this weekend with their first pop-up market of the season. Held at Misfit Union in Nicosia on Sunday, from 2 pm to 8 pm, this funky flea market will feature local artists selling vintage goods, tote bags, greeting cards, and vinyl records. DJ dprank will provide the soundtrack while the MU Kitchen serves up delicious food and drinks.
Xortaste Paradosi: Traditional Cypriot Festival
On Sunday, the picturesque village of Fikardou will host the Xortaste Paradosi event, celebrating traditional Cypriot culture. From 11 am to 5 pm, the village streets will come alive with local produce, crafts, and demonstrations of how to make traditional Cypriot goods. Visitors can participate in free clay workshops and enjoy tastings of local delicacies like palouze, zivania, trahanas, and halloumi.
