Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos is excited to announce the debut solo exhibition of photographer Emma Louise Charalambous next month, titled “Amensalism.” This exhibit delves into the intricate power dynamics influencing both environmental and urban landscapes in Cyprus.
Exhibition Overview
The exhibition is organized into two distinct segments, each addressing different aspects of power dynamics in Cyprus.
Part One: “What’s Up With The Sky”
In this segment, Charalambous adopts a documentary-style approach to highlight significant ecological and sociocultural issues related to air pollution. The aim is to reveal the underlying power structures and underscore the critical need for addressing the ongoing environmental crisis.
Part Two: “Power Play”
The second part, titled “Power Play,” provides a fresh perspective on the themes of censorship and power struggles within urban settings. This section presents covered graffiti as inadvertent abstract art, suggesting these alterations signify an unspoken exchange between authorities and marginalized communities. The result is a complex, layered representation of the urban environment, capturing the impact of “sanitisation” and the reduction of public space.
