The Nicosia International Festival 2024 brings a unique and thrilling concert experience to the stage with composer Stavros Gasparatos’s latest work, blending the rich sounds of an acoustic piano with cutting-edge electronic and video installations. Set to be showcased at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre on November 5, this performance promises to immerse audiences in a hybrid world where music, art, and technology intersect. This innovative concert, presented by Nicosia 2030, represents a forward-thinking vision for the arts.
The Performance: Expanded Piano II
Titled Expanded Piano II, this artistic endeavor plunges the audience into an entirely new experience with the piano. At the center of the performance is a specially crafted hybrid instrument—a fusion of acoustic piano and a mechanic and electronic installation that operates in harmony with a video installation. Together, they create a multisensory experience that expands the boundaries of traditional performance.
Expanded Piano II continues a journey Gasparatos began a decade ago with his original Expanded Piano project, premiered at EMPAC in New York. Since then, the project has captivated audiences in Athens, Limassol, and other cities, evolving to incorporate new technologies and artistic techniques. This performance is part of Gasparatos’ ongoing exploration into how modern sensory tools can push the boundaries of music and honor influences from pioneering artists like John Cage and Aphex Twin.
